The Kano State House of Assembly has passed into law the Kano State Emirate Council Law (Amendment 2), effectively dissolving all five Emirates in the state.

This decision followed deliberations on the floor of the House during the plenary session presided over by the Speaker, Hon. Ismail Falgore, on Thursday.

The Kano State Emirate Council Amendment Bill was considered after successfully passing its second and third readings.

Earlier, the Deputy Speaker, Alhaji Muhammad Bello Butu, explained that repealing the law would revive the lost glory of Kano, noting that dividing the Kano Emirate into five had diminished the state's capacity and dignity at the national level.

The Majority Leader, Lawan Dala, added that the Emirate Council served as a custodian of culture, which had been distorted by the creation of additional emirates. He emphasised the need to revert to Kano's historical background of one emirate, one people, and one state.

Recall that in 2019, the Kano Assembly passed an executive bill sponsored by the then governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, which split the state into five emirates by creating four new emirates with first-class emirs in Gaya, Rano, Karaye, and Bichi.

The move, according to observers, was intended to reduce the influence of the then Emir of Kano, Lamido Sanusi, who was engaged in a protracted conflict with the former governor, Abdullahi Ganduje.

Majority Leader and representative of the Dala State Constituency in the House, Lawan Hussaini Chediyar Yan Gurasa, who sponsored the bill told the press that the bill has been forwarded to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for assent.

“With the passage of this bill, there is no longer an active emir in Kano in any of the five emirates – Kano, Bichi, Gaya, Rano, and Karaye. The law now authorises the governor to call upon the traditional kingmakers to choose a new emir,” stated Hussaini.
