The chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has presented the security working model for the 2023 General Election.
Professor Mahmood Yakubu presented the Code of Conduct and Rules of Engagement for Security Personnel to the Inter-agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) in Abuja on Tuesday.
The code was jointly signed by the National Security Adviser and Co-Chair of ICEES, Major General Babagana Monguno (rtd); the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba; and the INEC chairman.
Professor Yakubu pointed out that the code was essential to the development, deepening, and consolidation of democracy and democratic governance in Nigeria.
He expressed satisfaction with the assurance got from the police and other security agencies.
“The commission is encouraged by the assurances of security in all locations where elections and electoral activities will be conducted,” Professor Yakubu said.
“Equally importantly, the commission is aware that the security agencies are going to protect not only our officials and facilities but also accredited observers, journalists, service providers, and above all, the voters themselves.”
The National Security Adviser’s representative at the presentation, Sanusi Galadima, warned politicians against exploiting the current shortage of cash and petrol in Nigeria to ignite civil unrest before, during, and after the General Election.
He promised well-coordinated intelligence and security for peaceful elections and also urged INEC to get the political candidates to commit to peaceful polls.
