The Academic Staff Union of Universities of the Bayero University Kano (BUK) has described the federal government as a serial liar and breaker of agreements.
This is coming on the heels of the half salary the government paid to university lecturers in October.
Expressing their anger during a protest at the university's main campus on Thursday, the Kano Zonal Coordinator of ASUU, Professor Abdulkadir Mohammed accused the government of waging war on Nigeria’s intellectual brains.
The protesting lecturers delivered a letter to the Vice Chancellor of BUK.
Professor Mohammed would take an undisclosed action at the “right time” if their grievances are not addressed.
Students of BUK protested in solidarity with the lecturers, chanting “no pay no votes.”
The students demanded an end to the impasse between the federal government and ASUU while accusing the government of sabotaging education in Nigeria.
ASUU, the umbrella body of lecturers in Nigerian federal public universities, ended an eight-month strike on 14 October.
The lecturers resumed the following week but were paid half their salaries for the month.
