Kano Govt Pledges Support for Journalists Through Training and Capacity Building

The Kano State government has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting journalists in the state through continuous training and capacity-building initiatives aimed at enhancing professionalism in the media industry.

The pledge was made on Wednesday during the swearing-in ceremony of the newly elected Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Correspondents’ Chapel, Murtala Adewale of The Guardian Newspapers.

Other executives also sworn in today include his Vice Chairman, Yusuf Bala (VON), Salim Umar Ibrahim (Daily Trust), Secretary, Bashir Bello (Vanguard Newspapers) Treasurer.

Also, Ramatu Garba (News Agency of Nigeria – NAN) was sworn in as the Financial Secretary, while Salihu Ali of Voice of Nigeria (VON) and Mrs. Longtong Yakubu of Leadership Newspapers are the new Assistant Secretary and Auditor respectively.

Speaking during the ceremony, the State Commissioner for Information, Comrade Ibrahim Waiya, said “The government is ready to collaborate with the Correspondents’ Chapel and the broader NUJ structure to promote sustainable development through responsible journalism.”

Comrade Waiya, represented by the Director of Information in the Ministry, Inuwa Idris Yakasai emphasised that “empowering journalists with skills and knowledge is crucial in strengthening democracy and ensuring accurate, ethical reporting.”

Speaking on behalf of the elected executives, the newly sworn-in Chairman of the Correspondents’ Chapel, Murtala Adewale assured that “the new leadership would prioritise training and retraining of members to align with global media standards.“

He stated that capacity building would be central to the Chapel’s agenda, with a focus on sustainable development goals and journalistic integrity.

The ceremony, held at the NUJ Secretariat was well attended by representative of the Kano State Commissioner of Police, senior officials of the NUJ, and members of the media community.
