The Kogi State government has expressed deep sorrow over the death of at least 26 passengers who lost their lives in a boat mishap on the River Niger.
The tragic incident occurred on Wednesday when traders traveling from Ibaji Local Government Area in Kogi State to Ilushi market in neighboring Edo State were involved in a boat accident.
Local reports suggest that the vessel was carrying dozens of people when it capsized, leading to multiple fatalities.
Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo described the incident as “a heartbreaking loss” and extended condolences to the bereaved families and the entire Ibaji community.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased in this moment of grief,” Governor Ododo said in a statement.
“I have directed the State Emergency Management Agency to work with local authorities to provide immediate support and relief to those affected.”
The governor further pledged that the state will step up efforts, in collaboration with federal agencies, to strengthen safety on waterways and prevent such tragedies.
“We must prioritize safety by avoiding overloading and by using life jackets whenever we travel by water,” he urged, appealing particularly to riverine communities.
The Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, who signed the government’s statement, affirmed that the administration stands firmly with the people of Ibaji during this difficult time.
