The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has warned of widespread rains and thunderstorms across the country from Monday through Wednesday, with possible flooding in parts of Benue, Taraba, and Cross River States.
In its three-day outlook released on Sunday, the agency said thunderstorms with moderate rains will hit much of the northern region, including Sokoto, Zamfara, Kebbi, Katsina, Kaduna, Kano, Bauchi, Gombe, and Taraba on Monday morning, with further downpours expected later in the day.
Central states such as Niger, Kwara, the FCT, Kogi, Benue, and Nasarawa are also expected to experience thunderstorms and light rains, while southern states — including Oyo, Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Rivers, Bayelsa, and Cross River — will see cloudy skies in the morning followed by moderate thunderstorms later.
The pattern is forecast to continue through midweek, with cloudy intervals, scattered thunderstorms, and light-to-moderate rainfall expected nationwide.
NiMet has urged residents in flood-prone areas to activate emergency response plans and warned motorists to avoid driving in heavy rain or through flash-flood zones.
The agency also advised Nigerians to secure loose outdoor objects, disconnect electrical appliances during storms, and stay clear of tall trees to reduce risks from lightning or falling branches.
Airline operators were reminded to obtain airport-specific weather reports for effective flight planning, while the public was urged to rely on NiMet’s verified channels for timely updates.
