The Nigerian Civil Society Situation Room says it has no confidence in the ability of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to store sensitive election materials.

The group hinged its stance on the partisanship of the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele who was a presidential aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2022.

The convener of the group, Ene Obi said this at a briefing in Abuja on Thursday.

She disclosed that not only her group, but other civil society groups in Nigeria had lost confidence in the CBN to be neutral.

“How is it possible that somebody at the head of the CBN is a partisan, card-carrying person and he had the audacity to challenge the courts.

“And we are shocked that he’s still handling the CBN. We call on the president – if the man is not resigning – to terminate his appointment with his immediate effect,” she said.

Mr. Emefiele had gone to court in May to seek the right to run for president without resigning as the head of Nigeria’s apex bank.

His request was turned down by the Federal High Court in Abuja.
