A man identified as 21-year-old Nasire Best of Maryland was killed after opening fire near a White House security checkpoint on Saturday evening, according to the United States Secret Service.
The Secret Service said the suspect approached a security checkpoint shortly after 6 p.m. local time, pulled a weapon from his bag and began firing at officers.
In a statement, the agency’s chief of communications, Anthony Guglielmi, said officers returned fire, striking the suspect.
“Secret Service Police returned fire striking the suspect who was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced deceased,” Guglielmi said.
Authorities said one civilian bystander was also hit by gunfire during the incident, while no Secret Service personnel were injured.
The White House was briefly placed on lockdown following the shooting. Donald Trump was reportedly inside the White House at the time.
Officials said the suspect had previous encounters with the Secret Service, including alleged threats, and also had a history of mental health issues.
