15-year-old Akilo Charles from CMS Grammar School is through to the Round of 16 stage of the ‘I Beg To Differ’ debate tournament after defeating 14-year-old Balogun David of Heritage Group of Schools.
The first playoff debate between the two contestants centered on the topic, "Former Governors Should Be Banned from Taking Government Appointments."
David, who spoke in support of banning ex-governors from government appointment, argued that such a ban would help "send a strong signal that public service is a responsibility and not a continuation of their personal political legacies."
He insisted that the ban would help increase meritocracy and not favouritism.
In his argument, Charles stated that ex-governors who have spent four to eight years in government and thus have enough experience in service.
She added that having ex-governors hold government appointments will lead to continuity in governance.
Charles emerged as the winner of the playoff debate, thus progressing to the Round of 16 stage of the tournament.
In the second playoff debate, Ogunnaya Ayomide advanced to the Round of 16 via a walkover due to the absence of his opponent, Ekunola Boluwatife.
The ‘I Beg To Differ’ playoff debate continues on Tuesday at 4pm.
