Liverpool’s poor run this season continued as they were convincingly beaten 4-0 by Italian side Napoli in their first group game of this season’s Champions League.
Last season’s finalists, Liverpool found themselves behind after just 5 minutes as Poitr Zielinski slotted calmly past Alisson after a handball by James Milner.
It could have been 2-0 thirteen minutes later as a penalty was awarded after a stamp from Virgil van Dijk on Victor Osimhen. The Nigerian however, missed his spot kick.
This didn’t deter Napoli though as they profited from poor defending from Liverpool to score a second through Zambo Anguissa. It was 3-nil four minutes before half-time, with Giovanni Simeone scoring his first ever Champions League goal.
It didn’t get better for the Reds in the second half as Zielinski scored his second, two minutes after the restart.
Luis Diaz pulled one back two minutes after but it proved to be only a consolation.
In Spain, Robert Lewandowski scored a hat trick as Barcelona kicked off their Champions League campaign with a 5-1 win over Czech Republic club, Viktoria Plzen.
Franck Kessie and Ferran Torres scored the other goals for the Spanish side.
