Vice President Kashim Shettima has departed New York for Germany after representing President Bola Tinubu at the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 80).

During his participation, Shettima earned commendation from UN Secretary-General António Guterres for Nigeria’s push for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council.

He also pitched Nigeria’s $200 billion energy transition plan to global investors, while strengthening strategic partnerships with the United Kingdom on trade, defence, and migration.

In delivering President Tinubu’s national statement, Shettima called for urgent UN reforms, reiterated Nigeria’s demand for permanent representation on the Security Council, and pressed for African ownership of the continent’s $700 billion mineral wealth.

He also highlighted Nigeria’s digital inclusion drive, engaged with the Gates Foundation on expanding healthcare and education, and positioned the country as a hub for the $3.4 trillion African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

The Vice President was seen off at John F. Kennedy International Airport by cabinet ministers in the UNGA delegation and officials of the Nigerian Mission. He is expected to return to Nigeria after concluding his official engagements in Germany.
