Dangote Remains Africa’s Richest as Net Worth Grows by $2.5bn

Businessman, Aliko Dangote is Africa’s richest man for the 11th year in a row.

He retained the title in Forbes magazine’s list of the richest people in 2022.

Alhaji Dangote added $2.5bn to his total assets in the last year from $11.5bn to $14bn.

The cement mogul’s wealth climbed to its 2018 level when he was worth $14.1bn before plunging to $10.4bn in 2019 and $8.3bn in 2020 when much of the world was affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

He ranks 130 on the global rich list which is dominated by Americans at the top.

Other Nigerians on the list include Globacom and Conoil founder, Mike Adenuga whose net worth is valued at $7.3bn and Dangote’s cement and sugar rival, Abdulsamad Rabiu whose assets add up to $6.9bn.

The 16 Africans on the Forbes list are together worth an estimated $83.1bn.

 

Elon Musk Climbs to the Top

Tesla CEO and Twitter’s largest shareholder, Elon Musk moved to the top of the rich list in 2022.

This is his first time in Forbes’ annual ranking of the world’s richest people.

There are 2,668 billionaires in the 2022 list, worth a collective $12.7 trillion. That is $400 billion less than in 2021.

 

The most drastic drops happened in Russia, where there are 34 fewer billionaires than last year following Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.

China has also seen a drop of 87 billionaires, following the government’s crackdown on tech companies.
