The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has raised fresh concern over the growing rate of cybercrime in Kano State and across Nigeria, warning that the country is now among the top five nations involved in cybercrime worldwide.
The EFCC Zonal Director for Kano and Jigawa, Friday Ebelo, made this known during a courtesy visit to AIM Plaza in Kano as part of activities to mark this year’s International Anti-Corruption Day (IACD).
The 2025 theme is “Uniting with Youth Against Corruption: Shaping Tomorrow’s Integrity.”
Mr. Ebelo described the rise in cybercrime as a serious threat to Nigeria’s image, economy, and youth population.
“Many young people are being drawn into internet fraud, which is damaging the country’s global reputation," he said.
He stated that “the commission has continued to arrest and prosecute cybercrime suspects, adding that several offenders are already facing trial in different courts.”
According to him, the EFCC will not relent in its duty to ensure that those involved in cyber and other financial crimes are brought to justice.

The Zonal Director also expressed worry over widespread corruption in the country, noting that corruption remains one of Nigeria’s biggest challenges.
He said the commission is relying on the “Corruption Prevention Act” and other laws to block loopholes and stop corrupt practices, especially in public offices.
Mr. Ebelo stressed that the fight against corruption cannot be left to the government alone, calling on the media, youths and the general public to join hands with the EFCC in promoting integrity and accountability.
As part of the event, the EFCC presented awards of excellence to Cool FM, Wazobia FM and Arewa Radio in recognition of their outstanding contributions to public enlightenment and the fight against cybercrime and corruption through their programmes.
He commended the radio stations for using their platforms to educate the public, especially young people, on the dangers of cybercrime and corruption, saying their efforts are helping to shape a better and more responsible future generation.
The visit also featured interactions staff of the triple station on how to strengthen collaboration in the fight against financial crimes and corruption in Kano and beyond.
