Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly have urged the Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, to intensify efforts in promoting the state’s cultural heritage and developing untapped tourism opportunities.

The charge came during plenary on Tuesday, where lawmakers debated ways to boost Lagos’ tourism sector.

Chairman of the House Committee on Tourism, Arts and Culture, Hon. Bonu Solomon, noted that this year’s World Tourism Day, marked on September 27, carried the theme “Our Country, Our Heritage.” He said the theme was significant for Lagos, given the state’s vast cultural and tourism potential.

“We should call on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to direct the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture to promote our cultural heritage. This will not only preserve our identity but also boost the state’s economy,” Solomon said.

Hon. Gbolahan Yishawu suggested that Lagos should create a yearly tourism calendar to help attract both local and foreign tourists.

In her contribution, Hon. Omolara Olumegbon pointed to the success of Detty December 2024, noting that immigration statistics revealed that over 500,000 visitors arrived in Nigeria during the festive season, many of them drawn to Lagos for its vibrant lifestyle.

Also speaking, Hon. Oladipo Ajomale proposed that the state should embark on an iconic tourism project, similar to Dubai’s Burj Khalifa. He recommended a landmark edifice such as a giant Eyo statue, complete with restaurants, shopping malls, and other attractions.

The lawmakers agreed that stronger investment in cultural heritage and innovative tourism projects would position Lagos as a global tourism destination.
