In Rwanda, President Paul Kagame has approved the retirement of several high-ranking military officers, including James Kabarebe, who served as a senior presidential advisor on security matters.
Meanwhile, in Cameroon, President Paul Biya has made new appointments within the country's marine corps. Edou Essono Serge Durel and Moudio Hervé have been appointed to key positions.
Following a military coup that ousted President Ali Bongo from power in Gabon. The coup, which occurred on Tuesday night, has drawn widespread condemnation from the international community, including the United Nations (UN) and the African Union (AU).
UN Secretary-General expressed firm condemnation, stating that the coup was an inappropriate response to the post-electoral crisis in Gabon. AU chairperson, Moussa Faki Mahamat, also strongly condemned the coup attempt, viewing it as an inappropriate solution to the ongoing post-electoral challenges.
This coup in Gabon is part of a troubling trend of military takeovers in Africa, which has previously seen democratically elected leaders removed from power in Niger Republic, Mali, Sudan, Burkina Faso, and Guinea-Bissau.
On social media platform Twitter, reactions to these shakeups have been mixed. Rinu Oduala, a Nigerian Twitter user with a substantial following, called on Cameroon's President Biya to step down from his position, questioning the wisdom of leading at the age of 90. "Why not just leave? At 90 years old?" she tweeted.
