President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, Tonobok Okowa says Team Nigeria could have won more medals at the just concluded World Athletics U-20 Championship in Kenya if they had more time to prepare.

Speaking at the reception held in honour of the returning athletes at the Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abuja on Tuesday, Tonobok promised to put the welfare of athletes and coaches first in a bid to get the very best out of them in their subsequent outings.

"We would have done better if not that we do not have enough time to prepare them," Tonobok said.

He added: “we must keep them in high-performance centres where they can have opportunities to work hard.

"Coaches & athletes welfare will be taken into cognisance to avoid distraction & to keep them focused in getting the best out of them"

The Biennial event which started on the 18th, ended on the 22nd of August, with Team Nigeria emerging 3rd on the overall medals table out of 116 participating countries, with a medal haul of four gold and three bronze medals.
