Severe flooding in Maiduguri, the capital city, has led to the escape of at least 200 inmates from the correctional center there.
On Tuesday, floods engulfed Maiduguri after the Alau Dam collapsed. The dam had been operating at maximum capacity for the past few weeks.
The flood, triggered by the overflow of the dam, breached security barriers and weakened the structure, leading to a jailbreak.
The incident was confirmed by security sources, according to Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication focusing on the Lake Chad region.
According to the journal, the inmates escaped because the floodwaters destroyed the facility's barricades, undermined its security, and compromised its structural integrity.
Makama stated that officials have started a manhunt to find and apprehend the fugitives.
