The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed that one person died and seven others were injured when an uncompleted three-storey building collapsed at GSM Market in Kano.
NEMA’s Kano Territorial Coordinator, Nuradeen Abdullahi, said the incident occurred at about 3:05 pm on Tuesday.
“The building collapsed while additional construction of stairs was still ongoing,” he said.
“One person died, six persons with minor injuries had been treated and discharged, while one person with multiple fractures was still receiving treatment,” the top NEMA official added.
Dr. Abdullahi said that search and rescue operations were still ongoing to bring out persons who are still trapped in the rubble.
State Government Suspends Swearing-in
In the meantime, the Kano State government has suspended the swearing-in ceremony of commissioners-designate earlier scheduled for Wednesday.
The Commissioner for Information, Muhammad Garba, said the decision is in sympathy with the victims of the GSM Market building collapse.
A statement from the commissioner also sympathised with the victims of Monday's flooding that occurred in many parts of the Kano metropolis.
