Nigeria has recorded a historic milestone at the Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) World Championships in Georgia, marking its first-ever appearance and first victory on the global stage.
The breakthrough came through Benjamin Edozie, who represented the Nigeria Mixed Martial Arts Federation (NMMAF).
Edozie defeated opponents from Zambia, Bulgaria, and England to advance to the semi-finals, securing Nigeria’s place on the official MMA world medal table for the first time.
“This is Nigeria’s victory,” the NMMAF said in a statement. “Our athletes have shown the world that Nigeria is ready, capable, and unstoppable.
To see our nation officially on the MMA world medal table is history in the making.”
Edozie’s journey began with a decisive opening win over Zambia.
He went on to defeat Bulgaria to reach the quarter-finals, before overcoming England in Georgia to cement his place in the semi-finals.
For the NMMAF, this achievement is more than an individual triumph; it is a national breakthrough that places Nigeria among the rising forces in global MMA.
The federation expressed optimism that the historic feat will inspire a new generation of Nigerian fighters to aim for greater success in international competitions.
