Pirates have kidnapped twelve boat passengers and their driver on the Isaka River in Rivers State.
The pirates also hijacked two passenger boats and carted away goods during the attack. The boats were heading to Colton Channel and Bille when the incident occurred on Tuesday.
The chairman of the Maritime Workers Union in Rivers State, Israel Waribo-Pepple, confirmed the development to Nigeria Info.
Waribo-Pepple appealed to the Rivers State Sole Administrator, Ibok Ete Ibas, to beef up security on the waterways, particularly around the Isaka and Bille routes.
He said the Maritime Police units were underfunded and ill-equipped to tackle insecurity in the area.
When contacted, the spokesperson of the Rivers State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, said she would respond to the inquiry later.
