Tinubu Has Not Cancelled 5-Year US Visas, Presidency Clarifies

The Presidency has debunked widespread rumours suggesting that Nigeria has stopped issuing five-year multiple-entry visas to United States citizens.

Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga in a statement confirmed that the policy remains in place and has not been reversed.

According to the statement, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has never issued any directive to cancel the existing visa reciprocity arrangement between Nigeria and the US. On the contrary, his administration has been committed to implementing all bilateral agreements in full.

The clarification follows public confusion over the US government’s recent changes to its visa policy for Nigerian citizens. While the US claimed it was acting on the principle of reciprocity, the Nigerian government insists it still grants five-year visas to Americans.

The statement also clarified the introduction of Nigeria’s new e-Visa system. The 90-day single-entry visa only applies to short-term visitors using the fast-track online platform, which has replaced the former visa-on-arrival scheme.

The Presidency says this new e-Visa policy is part of ongoing reforms aimed at boosting tourism, investment, and ease of doing business.

The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to engaging US authorities diplomatically to resolve any misunderstanding and called for continued mutual respect in bilateral relations.
