EPL Saturday: Nketiah Ends Liverpool's Perfect Start as League Delivers Late Goals

The Premier League served up a day of high drama, shock results, and a flurry of late goals on Saturday.

The headline event saw Crystal Palace stun previously perfect Liverpool with a 2-1 victory, while Manchester United's struggles continued with a damaging 3-1 defeat at Brentford.

Champions Manchester City delivered a comfortable win, but the afternoon was overshadowed by major upsets at Selhurst Park and Stamford Bridge.

Crystal Palace Topple Leaders Liverpool in Stoppage Time Thriller

Liverpool’s 100% start to the season came to a dramatic end at Selhurst Park, where a late strike from substitute Eddie Nketiah sealed a 2-1 victory for Crystal Palace.

Ismaila Sarr had put Palace ahead early on, and despite the champions pushing hard, they struggled to break down a resolute Eagles defence.

Federico Chiesa looked to have salvaged a point for the Reds with a late equaliser in the 87th minute, but Nketiah found the net deep into injury time to send the home crowd into raptures.

The result sees Palace move to second in the table, three points behind Liverpool, and extend their remarkable long-running unbeaten streak under manager Oliver Glasner.

Manchester United's Woes Deepen at Brentford

Pressure is mounting on Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim after his side suffered another chastening defeat, this time a 3-1 reverse at the hands of Brentford.

Brazilian striker Igor Thiago bagged a brace within the opening 20 minutes to set the tone for a chaotic afternoon for the visitors.

While Benjamin Sesko pulled one back for United, the defining moment came in the 76th minute when Captain Bruno Fernandes saw his penalty kick saved—his second penalty miss of the season.

Mathias Jensen wrapped up a deserved win for the Bees with a powerful stoppage-time effort, leaving United languishing mid-table with three defeats from their opening six matches.

Red Card Nightmare as Brighton Punish 10-Man Chelsea

At Stamford Bridge, Chelsea's afternoon unravelled spectacularly as they conceded three times after central defender Trevoh Chalobah was sent off early in the second half.

Enzo Fernández had given Chelsea a first-half lead, but Chalobah's 53rd-minute straight red card for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity turned the tide.

Brighton, marshalled brilliantly by manager Fabian Hürzeler, capitalised ruthlessly. Danny Welbeck scored the equaliser and then sealed the win with a second in the tenth minute of stoppage time, sandwiching a Maxim De Cuyper goal in the 90+2 minute.

The 3-1 loss marks a second consecutive defeat for Chelsea, deepening the team’s ongoing defensive crisis.

Haaland Double Spurs Man City Rout

In the day's only straightforward affair, Manchester City bounced back from recent results with a dominant 5-1 victory over newly promoted Burnley at the Etihad Stadium.

While Burnley's Jaidon Anthony did manage to briefly level the score at 1-1, two own goals from Burnley centre-back Maxime Esteve, a strike from Matheus Nunes, and a late brace from goal machine Erling Haaland secured an emphatic win for Pep Guardiola's side.

Haaland's double moves him onto eight goals for the season, already putting clear daylight between himself and the rest of the Premier League's top scorers.

Late Drama Elsewhere

The trend of late goals continued into the evening kick-off, as Tottenham Hotspur snatched a 1-1 draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Wolves, who are still looking for their first league win, took a deserved lead through Santiago Bueno in the second half and looked set for an upset until Spurs' Joao Palhinha struck a superb equaliser in the 94th minute.

Elsewhere, AFC Bournemouth also salvaged a point with a 93rd-minute goal to draw 2-2 at Leeds United, while Sunderland edged out Nottingham Forest 1-0 at the City Ground.

The results have significantly tightened the top of the table, with Crystal Palace now emerging as Liverpool's closest challengers after an action-packed matchweek.
