The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, has reversed his stance by withdrawing the Counter Subversion Bill and other related draft legislations.

The controversial bill initially proposed harsh penalties, including a 10-year imprisonment, a fine of N5 million, or both, for Nigerians who refuse to recite the national anthem. It also aimed to penalize those who express loyalty to organizations that undermine Nigeria’s sovereignty with a four-year imprisonment or a fine of N3 million.

In a statement released on Wednesday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Musa Krishi, Abbas explained that the decision to withdraw the bill was made in response to the concerns and feedback from Nigerians.

His spokesperson emphasized that the decision followed extensive consultations with various stakeholders and a careful consideration of the nation’s current circumstances.

The statement highlighted that Speaker Abbas Tajudeen, who has always prioritized the interests of the people and the unity of the nation, remains committed to ensuring that the House of Representatives truly reflects the will of the people.
