United States President Donald Trump has announced plans to impose an additional 10% tariff on any country that aligns itself with the BRICS alliance, describing the bloc’s policies as “anti-American.”
In a post on Truth Social, Trump declared:
“Any Country aligning themselves with the Anti-American policies of BRICS, will be charged an additional 10% Tariff. There will be no exceptions to this policy. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
The U.S. president did not elaborate on what he meant by “anti-American policies” but reaffirmed a strong stance against the growing economic bloc.
The BRICS group was originally formed by Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. In 2023, the group expanded to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.
The announcement comes as President Bola Tinubu arrives in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to participate in the 17th BRICS Summit, marking Nigeria’s first-ever appearance as a “partner country” at the influential economic forum.
According to Presidential Spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu’s jet touched down at Galeao Air Force Base at 8:45 PM (local time) on Friday night. He was received by senior Brazilian government officials, including the Secretary for Africa and the Middle East and the Secretary for Innovation and Commerce.
