Callers on Nigeria Info’s Morning Crossfire have reacted to the federal government’s provisional salary increment for federal employees.
In what seems a successful last-minute move to avert a shutdown of the nation’s economy, Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu in his 63rd Independence Day broadcast announced an additional N10,000 monthly salary raise for an average low-grade federal worker for the next six months.
This comes as Labour unions prepare to embark on an indefinite strike over hardship caused by the petrol subsidy removal.
“Why did the government rush this issue, why not allow labour to first go on strike…” he asked.
He believes the rush to avert a shutdown of the economy is about protecting the interest of the government and not about the impact it will have on the masses.
He wondered why the government has not considered subsidising food items, housing, fixing refineries, and other areas that will directly improve the lives of the masses.
In line with the first caller, this caller lamented the short-term impact of a provisional salary increase. He called for price control as a way of cushioning the impact of the fuel subsidy removal for all Nigerians.
“…they said they will add salary for Labour, what about those that don’t have a job…” another caller said, questioning why workers were prioritised over other Nigerians with no means of livelihood.
He lamented the poor state of the refineries despite the country’s huge resources, calling for the government to be more accountable to the people.
