Artificial Intelligence has changed the way students learn and get information. While some believe it has made schoolwork easier and improved how quickly students get answers, others are concerned about its effect on students’ ability to read, research and think independently.
A survey conducted at the University of Port Harcourt revealed mixed reactions from students on how AI is being used for academic work. Some students admitted that AI could make students lazy. They said while it helps with assignments and makes difficult topics easier to understand, some students have become too dependent on it, even using it during examinations.
One postgraduate student who spoke with our correspondent compared the situation with his time as a student, when assignments meant spending hours in the library, reading books and going through PDF materials. He said students today often get answers from AI without taking the time to read or understand the information before submitting it. For another student, however, AI has made learning easier. He explained that he uses it to understand topics taught in class, especially when a lecturer explains something he does not fully understand.
Rather than seeing AI as a replacement for studying, he considers it another way to break down difficult subjects and improve his understanding. His experience shows why some students see the technology as a useful addition to their education. This raises an important question: Is there a way to balance AI use with independent thinking?
